How to apply for the Argentine Nationality

  • There are three types of Argentine nationals:

A) Natives: people born in territory under Argentine jurisdiction.

B) By option: people born outside territory under Argentine jurisdiction, whose parents (or one of them) are Argentine citizens (natives or by option) and opt for the Argentine nationality. If the parents (or parent) are native Argentines, their children may opt for the Argentine nationality at an Embassy or Consulate. If the parents (or parent) are themselves Argentines by option, their children must opt for the Argentine nationality via a local attorney before a Federal Court in Argentina.

C) Nationalized: foreigners who spend two continuous years residing in territory under Argentine jurisdiction and apply for the citizenship before a Federal Court in Argentina. Nationalized Argentines are not entitled to pass the citizenship to their children.

The Argentine citizenship, either native or by option, may be passed from one generation to the immediate next (meaning, from parents to their children). You may not get the Argentine citizenship straight from your grandparents. Foreigners married to Argentine citizens are not per se entitled to the Argentine citizenship, though they may apply for it as described in C).

  • Requirements.

In order to apply for the Argentine citizenship at this Embassy, it is necessary to submit the following documents:

1. Applicant’s passport or identity document.

2. Applicant’s Lebanese birth certificate legalized by this Embassy and translated into Spanish.

3. Applicant’s native Argentine parent’s birth certificate and National Identity Document (“Documento Nacional de Identidad”).

4. In the case of applicants under 18 years of age, both parents need to be present and sign their consent. If one of the parents is of foreign nationality, he/she must submit an appropriate identity document.
