Electronic passport

Only Argentine nationals may hold an electronic passport of the Argentine Republic. Foreigners cannot apply for this kind of passport, even if they held an Argentine passport under the legislation prior to the year 2011.

Electronic passports are issued exclusively by the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAPER) and are valid for 10 (ten) years for adults and 5 (five) years in the case of minors.

These passports are processed at the consulates, where the applicants' data is taken and the information is uploaded. They are printed in Argentina and sent by postal mail to the consulates, in order to be handed over to their holders.

Electronic passports take between 45-60 days from the day of the application to arrive at this Consular Section. Unforseeable circumstances may cause delays beyond this timeframe. Applicants should take this into account when planning trips and immigration procedures before foreign authorities. It is not possible for this Embassy to expedite this process, all inquiries or requests on this matter will go unanswered. It must be especially taken into account that the passports in the possession of their holders cease to be valid from the moment the request for a new passport is completed. Applicants must refrain from using their old passport until their new travel document arrives at this Consular Section.

Once the application process is concluded, you will be given a receipt with the RENAPER website and a tracking number, so that you can follow up on your application. Said website will indicate the moment in which the passport arrives at this Embassy and is ready to be collected by its holder. If you provided an email address, you will also receive notice of your passport's arrival by email. Applicants may collect their passport from Monday to Friday, from 09.30 until 14.00, without need for an appointment.

According to the regulations of each country, the visas and residences that are attached to passports may continue to be valid until their expiration date, even if said passports are renewed and lose their validity. In this case, when applying for a new passport, applicants must declare that they have valid visas and/or residences in their travel document. Once you receive your new passport, the previous one will be canceled by cutting the cover's upper right corner and you will have to travel with both documents: the new one and the previous one where the valid visas and/or residences are attached. In every case, it is recommended to consult the authorities of the country that issued the visa or residence.

Each person may have only one valid Argentine passport. For this reason, the new passport will only be given to the applicant upon surrender of the old one, which will be duly canceled and returned to its holder.

A new travel document may be processed regardless of the period remaining for the expiration of the current passport. However, the reasons for requesting a new passport must be stated as an affidavit.

Electronic passports will be processed at this Consular Office only for Argentine nationals residing in the Lebanese Republic, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
