Emergency passport

Machine-readable emergency passports are issued at consulates, with prior authorization from RENAPER. The procedure takes about two hours, depending on the time difference with Argentina.

Emergency passports are valid for a maximum of one year and cannot be extended. They are valid to travel to any country in the world. However, a large number of States require a visa in order to use them. Also, some countries do not accept to stamp residence visas in emergency passports. It will be the applicants’ responsibility to contact the authorities of the country to which they wish to travel and find out about the acceptance of this travel document.

Emergency passports will be issued only in cases of urgency, which prevent the applicant from waiting for the arrival of their electronic passport from Argentina. They are not intended nor designed to replace electronic passports. Since they lack the security measures of e-passports, delays are to be expected when presenting an emergency passport to the immigration authorities of third countries. It is recommended to keep this circumstance in mind when planning trips.

Cases in which emergency passports may be issued:

1. Tourists who have lost or have had their electronic passport stolen and wish to continue traveling to third countries.

Exceptionally and only for this type of passport, RENAPER will approve the procedure without applicants submitting their DNI.

2. Argentine citizens residing in this jurisdiction, who cannot wait for the arrival of the electronic passport, because they must:

a) Travel urgently to a third country;

b) Present a travel document before local authorities in an urgent manner.

The electronic passport will always be processed together with the emergency passport if the applicant resides in this Consular Section’s jurisdiction. The electronic passport will not be handed over to its holder until the applicant surrenders his/her emergency passport. If the emergency passport has valid visas and/or residences, it will be canceled and returned to its holder.

  • REQUIREMENTS

With the sole exception mentioned above, emergency passports are issued meeting the same requirements as an electronic passport, provided there are duly justified exceptional situations.

  • COST: USD 40
